New DDOT Report Validates Warnings from Amy Witherite on Robotaxi Safety

Yahoo Finance reports that a new research report commissioned by the District Department of Transportation reinforces long-standing safety concerns raised by traffic safety advocates, including Witherite Law Group founder Amy Witherite.

The report concludes that autonomous vehicles are not yet ready for unrestricted deployment in complex urban environments. It highlights ongoing challenges with unpredictable traffic conditions, emergency situations, and gaps in oversight that autonomous systems continue to struggle to manage safely.

Witherite described the findings as validation of warnings she and other safety advocates have raised regarding robotaxis and other driverless technologies operating on city streets.

“The takeaway is clear — this technology is still evolving, and when it comes to dense urban areas like Washington, D.C., safety cannot be assumed,” Witherite said. She emphasized that autonomous vehicles must demonstrate reliability and accountability before being widely deployed in environments where public safety is at stake.

The report also raises concerns about the lack of consistent safety standards at the federal level and the heavy reliance on self-reporting by autonomous vehicle companies. It recommends a phased, oversight-driven approach that prioritizes controlled pilot programs, strict safety requirements, and transparent data reporting.

Witherite praised Washington, D.C.’s cautious strategy, describing it as a responsible model for other cities considering how to integrate autonomous vehicles while protecting the public.
