Houstonian Chandra Brooks Surprised with Her Check in a Dramatic Reveal During Lunch

HOUSTON, TEXAS (May 10, 2021) —When Chandra Brooks accepted her husband Derrick’s last-minute invitation to Iguana Joe’s Mexican restaurant in Atascocita, she had no idea that the meal’s “dessert course” would include a $5,000 check presented in person by Amber Mostyn of Mostyn Law followed by a live, on-air connection to Majic 102.1’s Kandi Eastman. As Chandra and her husband enjoyed a quiet lunch in a corner booth, Amber Mostyn and her team, bearing flowers along with an oversized presentation check and accompanied by a video crew, made their way through the restaurant to surprise their winner.

“I am overwhelmed,” Chandra would later exclaim in her on air call to Kandi Eastman. “This was totally unexpected. What a Mother’s Day gift! One that will go down in history!”

As the winner of the 5K For Mother’s Day Giveaway, this Houston mother of eight was selected by Mostyn Law from over 400 online entries received over a three-week period.

"So many Houston moms have gone even further above and beyond the usual during the pandemic and the winter storm in February. They’re the ‘sheroes’ of the last year” observes Amber Mostyn, co-founder of Mostyn Law and a mother of two. “We got so many powerful stories about resilient and compassionate women, but Chandra’s story connected to the sacrifice and commitment to family that we had hoped to bring to light. I couldn’t wait to meet her and learn more about this remarkable mother."

Chandra Brooks’ nomination, submitted by her husband, detailed the love and generosity that brought the five sons of Shandra’s late sister into the Brooks home, following her sister’s passing. In 2017, those nephews came to live with the Brooks’ three sons and since that time, this family of ten has survived the pandemic and its associated social and economic perils to form a caring, cohesive unit.

According to her husband, Mrs. Brooks will likely use her $5,000 award to launch Her2Kids (H2K) a non-profit organization that will provide emotional and well-being support to children after the unexpected death of a parent.

“I think that Chandra’s plans to help other families with children in circumstances like hers is what put her over the top for us, “observes Mostyn. “After all the heartache that she and her family have experienced, that fact that she will now help even more kids who’ve lost a parent is just remarkable.”

The 5K for Mother’s Day campaign, which ran concurrently with the law firm’s salute to Houston Difference Makers in Education, is the latest in a series of community outreach, support and awareness initiatives launched by Mostyn Law and 1 800-TruckWreck since 2020. Based on the public’s overwhelmingly positive response, a similar campaign for Father’s Day is now in the works.
