ATLANTA – When Amy Witherite launched her “Making A Difference” Scholarship Program at Atlanta ISD’s South Atlanta High during the 2018-2019 school year, it wasn’t a completely new initiative. Since 2014, Witherite has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to students in her home state of Texas.
“The opportunity to attend college can open so many doors in a young person’s life,” said Witherite. “When we opened 1-800-TruckWreck in Atlanta, it was important for me to continue the tradition of helping students in this community further their education and reach their full potential.”
Witherite initially planned to award five $2500 renewable scholarships to outstanding South Atlanta High seniors, but after interviewing all the finalists, she realized five scholarships were not enough.
“We spent a full day interviewing each of the 13 finalists, and it was impossible to pick only five winners. We were so impressed by these students’ drive to succeed, despite financial hardships and life challenges,” said Witherite. “All of these students deserve the opportunity to pursue their dreams, so I added eight additional scholarships.”
Witherite surprised the students with poster-board sized checks at the school’s award ceremony in May. She also informed the students that as long as they maintain a 2.5 GPA and take a minimum of twelve credit hours, their $2500 “Making A Difference” scholarships would be renewable annually.
On October 29, Witherite will be honored by the Atlanta Independent School District as a School Based Partner of the Year for the South Atlanta Cluster. She is one of ten honorees and was chosen, in part, because of the scholarships she provided to South Atlanta High seniors.
“Witherite Law Group has provided a significant boost to our school community,” said Dr. Patricia Ford, Principal of South Atlanta High School. “These scholarships enable students to expand their horizons to see what opportunities lie ahead for them. We thank Amy Witherite for becoming an integral part of our village.”
“I am inspired by the students of South Atlanta High School,” said Witherite. “We are already accepting applications for our second year of “Making A Difference” Scholarships, and we look forward to supporting these students for many years to come.”
